Chapter 219, Statutes of 2026

Physical Therapy Board of California

California extends the Physical Therapy Board through 2030, raises licensing fees, and tightens eligibility for discipline-relief petitions.

The law keeps the board operating and funded to license and regulate physical therapists and assistants. It also limits when disciplined licensees with specified sex-offense histories may seek reinstatement or reduced penalties.

What the law does

  • Extends the Physical Therapy Board of California’s authority and its executive officer through January 1, 2031.
  • Requires legislative policy-committee review when the board’s authority expires.
  • Raises physical therapist and physical therapist assistant application, issuance, and renewal fees to $300, with board-adjustable caps of $600 for those fees.
  • Raises the physical therapist license-issuance fee to $150, with a board-adjustable cap of $300.
  • Bars the board from considering reinstatement or penalty-modification petitions from certain applicants required to register as sex offenders or whose conviction involved specified sexual misconduct, while preserving an exception for registration based solely on a misdemeanor indecent-exposure conviction.

Who it affects

  • Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants applying for or renewing California licenses.
  • Licensees whose licenses were revoked or suspended, or who are on probation and seek reinstatement or modified discipline.
  • The Physical Therapy Board of California and its staff.

Context

Public protection remains the board’s highest priority in licensing, regulatory, and disciplinary decisions.
