Public transit: California Transit Stop Registry: transit datasets

Standardized stop names, locations, identifiers, seating, and shelter data can make transit information more consistent across operators and trip-planning tools.

What the law does ​

• Requires the Department of Transportation to create the California Transit Stop Registry by June 1, 2027, with transit-operator input.
• Requires the registry to include each stop’s name, location, state-assigned unique identifier, and reported seating and shelter availability.
• Requires the department to use publicly available data where possible and update the registry at least annually.
• Requires transit operators by January 1, 2028, to align stop names and locations with the registry, use its identifiers in published stop datasets, and report seating and shelter information.
• Preserves transit operators’ existing internal stop-identification numbers.

Context ​

The state must reimburse qualifying local-agency costs if the Commission on State Mandates determines the law creates a reimbursable state mandate.
