Pupil safety: comprehensive school safety plans
California will review and recommend updates to comprehensive school safety-plan requirements and approval processes.
School safety plans must address evolving threats and emergencies while remaining useful, cohesive, and accessible to school staff and communities.
What the law does
- Requires the Education Commissioner, with the State Board of Education and stakeholders, to review existing school safety plans and develop recommendations.
- Requires the review to assess plan goals, required elements, development and adoption procedures, and future update processes.
- Requires recommendations to improve plan structure, accessibility, local transparency and stakeholder input, and procedures for adding or removing plan elements.
- Requires a report to the Department of Finance and legislative fiscal and policy committees by July 1, 2028.
- Authorizes the State Department of Education to contract with nongovernmental entities, including through approved subcontracting, to carry out this work.
Who it affects
- Public schools, school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and their staff.
- Pupils, parents, educators, school employees, school nurses, and school administrators.
- Local law-enforcement and fire agencies participating in the stakeholder process.
