Public postsecondary education: tuition and fees: Team USA student athletes

Eligible Olympic and Paralympic athletes can receive resident tuition and fee rates while they establish California residency, rather than facing higher nonresident charges.

What the law does ​

• Removes the July 1, 2032 expiration date for resident tuition classification for qualifying Team USA student athletes.
• Grants resident classification to athletes training in California through an elite-level program approved by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee until they meet California's ordinary residency-duration requirement.
• Requires athletes to submit United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee documentation verifying their training-program eligibility to their campus.
• Provides for state reimbursement if the Commission on State Mandates finds that the law imposes reimbursable costs on local agencies or school districts.

Who it affects ​

• Team USA student athletes who meet eligibility standards set by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and their sport's national governing body.
• California Community Colleges, the California State University, and the University of California campuses that determine students' tuition classification.

Context ​

The University of California applies this rule only if the Regents of the University of California adopt a resolution making it applicable.
