Student transfer: tribal colleges

The law aims to help tribal college students move into California State University and eligible community college baccalaureate programs with less duplicated coursework. The University of California is asked, but not required, to participate.

What the law does ​

• Requires California State University and community college districts offering bachelor’s degrees to develop transfer and course-articulation programs with participating California tribal colleges.
• Requires collaboration on aligning coursework with the California General Education Transfer Curriculum where appropriate.
• Requires programs to include planning, faculty curriculum work, counseling, financial-aid and transfer services, diversity efforts, early outreach, concurrent enrollment, and support centers.
• Requires California State University and eligible community college districts, when capacity is available, to offer concurrent-enrollment opportunities for tribal college students.
• Requires California State University and the California Community Colleges to assess transfer tools, systems, and curricula that best communicate course transferability for tribal college students.

Context ​

The law does not require institutions to accept students who fail to meet transfer requirements or to recognize coursework from tribal colleges that lack qualifying institutional accreditation.
