Alcoholic beverages: imports: personal or household use: reasonable amounts
California caps alcohol brought in for personal use by pedestrians and noncommercial vehicle travelers at 6 liters every 31 days.
The law replaces the prior federal duty-free-based limit with a clear state limit for these travelers. It preserves an exception from state alcohol-import licensing rules for qualifying personal or household alcohol.
What the law does
- Allows adults to bring a reasonable amount of alcohol from outside the United States for personal or household use.
- Limits adults entering as pedestrians or in vehicles that are not common carriers to 6 liters every 31 days.
- Exempts qualifying personal or household alcohol from state licensing restrictions.

- Adults entering the United States on foot.
- Adults entering the United States in private or other noncommon-carrier vehicles.
