Speed safety systems
Long Beach can add two speed cameras on Pacific Coast Highway, while all participating city programs must better blur bystander images.
The law expands automated speed enforcement on an eight-mile Long Beach corridor identified as having about one-fifth of the city’s traffic fatalities. It also strengthens privacy protections for people and vehicles not accused of speeding.
What the law does
- Authorizes Long Beach, through January 1, 2032, to operate two speed safety systems beyond its population-based limit on Pacific Coast Highway.
- Permits those Long Beach systems on Pacific Coast Highway despite the general ban on systems on California state routes.
- Requires systems to blur unavoidably captured images of other drivers, vehicles, and pedestrians not subject to a violation notice.
- Applies the blurring requirement to cameras installed before January 1, 2027, only where feasible.
