Zero-emission transit buses: axle weight
California extends higher axle-weight limits for newly solicited zero-emission transit buses through 2031.
The law accommodates the heavier curb weight of zero-emission buses while retaining phased reductions in allowable axle weight. It applies based on when a transit agency issues its procurement solicitation.
What the law does
- Sets a 25,000-pound curb-weight limit per axle for zero-emission transit buses solicited in 2027.
- Sets a 24,000-pound limit for buses solicited in 2028 or 2029, and a 23,000-pound limit for buses solicited in 2030 or 2031.
- Sets a 22,000-pound limit for zero-emission transit buses solicited on or after January 1, 2032.
- Preserves federal interstate weight limits and requires axles exceeding 20,000 pounds gross weight to have four load-bearing wheels.
Who it affects
- Publicly owned or operated transit systems and their contracted transit operators procuring zero-emission buses.
- Zero-emission transit-bus manufacturers and suppliers.
