School curriculum: physical education framework: cardiopulmonary resuscitation: automated external defibrillators

California’s curriculum advisers must consider adding CPR and AED content when the physical education framework is next revised after January 1, 2027.

Physical education reaches high school pupils regardless of whether their school requires a health course. The change could broaden access to instruction on responding to cardiac emergencies.

What the law does

  • Requires the Instructional Quality Commission to consider including compression-only CPR and AED content in the next physical education framework revision after January 1, 2027.
  • Covers the importance, performance, and use of compression-only CPR and automated external defibrillators.

Who it affects

  • The Instructional Quality Commission.
  • School districts, charter schools, educators, and pupils using the physical education framework.

Context

Existing law ties required compression-only CPR instruction to high school health courses that are required for graduation.
