Public postsecondary education: Equity in Higher Education Act: campus contact
California requires CSU and community college systems to extend LGBTQIA2S+ campus contact access beyond main campuses.
Faculty, staff, and students at qualifying branch campuses and satellite sites must have an identified contact for LGBTQIA2S+ needs, with contact information made public.
What the law does
- Requires the California State University Trustees and community college district governing boards to provide a designated contact at branch campuses, qualifying satellite locations, and other non-main-campus sites.
- Allows institutions to meet that requirement by assigning an additional contact or having the main-campus contact hold regular virtual or in-person office hours at the site.
- Requires the contact’s name and information to appear on the applicable site’s website and in its printed and online directories.
- Excludes contacts from being Title IX coordinators or responsible employees, and bars them from sharing confidential reports of sexual harassment, sexual violence, or discrimination without prior written consent.
- Requests the University of California to comply if the Regents make the law applicable by resolution.
Who it affects
- LGBTQIA2S+ faculty, staff, and students at California State University and community college non-main-campus locations.
- California State University Trustees and community college district governing boards.
- The Regents of the University of California, if they opt to apply the law.
Context
A qualifying satellite location generally serves at least 100 students for at least one term and is within 50 miles of a main or branch campus.
