State holidays: Cesar Chavez Day: Farmworkers Day

The law replaces the prior March 31 Cesar Chavez Day holiday treatment with April 10 Farmworkers Day across state employment and optional public-school and community-college calendars. It also ends the separate August 26 California Farmworker Day designation.

What the law does ​

• Designates April 10 as Farmworkers Day and requires the Governor to proclaim it annually.
• Gives state employees April 10 as a paid holiday, with pay or holiday credit for employees required to work.
• Allows public schools and community colleges to close for Farmworkers Day, and allows covered classified employees to receive it as a paid holiday, when agreed to through collective bargaining.
• Allows public schools and educational institutions to hold Farmworkers Day exercises about the history of the U.S. farm labor movement using existing resources.
• Repeals California Farmworker Day on August 26.
• Delays changes that conflict with certain collective bargaining agreements made before January 1, 2027, until those agreements expire or are renewed.
