Parental communication: teacher meetings

The law expands access to individual teacher meetings while requiring schools to address privacy and confidentiality risks of remote communication.

What the law does ​

• Gives a parent, guardian, or educational rights holder unable to attend in person the right to communicate with their child’s teacher by telephone or a school-approved web conferencing platform.
• Prohibits recording or transcribing these phone or video meetings.
• Requires schools to notify participants of potential privacy and confidentiality risks from the meeting format or sensitive discussion.
• Requires both schools and participants to follow existing laws on nonconsensual recording.
