Streaming services: commercial advertisements
California extends its ban on overly loud streaming ads to music, podcasts, and user-generated video platforms.
Starting January 1, 2027, ads on covered streaming services cannot be louder than the content they accompany. The rule applies to services serving California residents.
What the law does
- Adds music streaming and podcast streaming services to the commercial-ad loudness ban.
- Clarifies that covered video streaming services include user-generated video streaming services.
- Requires covered services to follow the Federal Communications Commission's television ad-loudness standards.
Who it affects
- Music, podcast, and video streaming services serving California residents.
- User-generated video streaming platforms that carry commercial advertisements.
Context
The law does not cover services that provide video content without commercial advertisements.
