State Teachers’ Retirement System: positions subject to membership
AB 2519 expands which education jobs must be covered by California’s teachers’ retirement system beginning July 1, 2027.
More credentialed or permitted school and charter-school employees may gain State Teachers’ Retirement System membership and associated retirement contributions. The law sets a fixed effective date rather than waiting for system implementation capacity.
What the law does
- Adds positions requiring a Commission on Teacher Credentialing or State Department of Health Care Services permit to covered county office of education and school district positions.
- Covers specified positions at state-funded charter schools that perform or manage listed education functions and require, or would require in a non-charter public school, an authorized credential, license, permit, or certificate.
- Requires eligible charter-school governing bodies to designate covered positions by public resolution and identify their qualifying functions.
- Makes the expanded membership definition operative July 1, 2027.
Who it affects
- Employees in qualifying county office of education, school district, and charter-school positions.
- State-funded charter schools and their governing bodies.
- The State Teachers’ Retirement System and employers that make retirement contributions.
Context
