SB 837, Chapter 984, Statutes of 2026 · Wednesday 30 September 2026

Disaster and emergency preparedness

SB 837 adds emergency-preparedness education for older adults and people with disabilities to Aging and Disability Resource Connection services.

People with access and functional needs can face greater danger in disasters, especially during alerts, evacuations, and sheltering. The law makes local ADRC programs a source of tailored preparedness information.

What the law does

  • Requires ADRC programs to provide community education on preparedness and safety before, during, and after disasters and other emergencies.
  • Allows programs to use existing preparedness and response tools from state agencies and community partners.
  • Requires education to highlight local alerts and emergency plans, fire-department information, evacuation and transportation resources, and utility-service information.

Who it affects

  • Older adults and people with disabilities.
  • Caregivers, families, and communities seeking emergency-preparedness information.
  • Area agencies on aging and independent living centers that operate ADRC programs.

Context

Implementation depends on a specific appropriation in the state budget or another law.
